| The BIA-Sycuan firefighting academy program is a 21-day Marine Corps style “boot camp” school for professional entry-level firefighter certification and job placement within the federal, state, tribal and local fire services.
Former Marine Corps DI (professional drill instructors) take charge of 30 individual civilian recruits, weed out the best, and transform them into a team of gung-ho can-do fire fighters.
From check in to graduation — the school experience is physically and mentally challenging, and uses a steep 800-foot California mountain as a metaphor to overcome and conquer personal pre-conceived notions of endurance through teamwork, comradery and fierce group evolvement.
It is strict enforcement of rules, adherence to protocol, and discipline that sets the Sycuan fire academy training apart from less challenging firefighter programs.

Sycuan fire academy #11 — aka Two-Bit Thrashers — is pictured above just minutes after they were graduated at the Sycuan Resort.
The Sycuan Fire Department, in association with the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation tribal government, Sycuan Resort professional golf academy, the Bureau of Indian Affairs BIA, Southwestern College and the Golden Eagles Hotshots and Flycrews graduated their three-week 2009 wildland firefighter "boot camp" academy April 25th on the Sycuan Indian Reservation, San Diego County, Southern California.
FIREFIGHTING CAREER JOBS TRAINING
Graduates of the tough military-style "boot camp" wildland fire academy aviation school will qualify for employment opportunities with the prestigious Sycuan Fire Department engine crews, handcrews, hotshot crews, helicoptor flycrews, including BIA, CDF, and many other national, city and regional fire departments across the United States of America.

The 2003 wildland firefighter "boot camp" academy was graduated on June 21, 2003, Sycuan Indian Reservation.
The 2002 wildland firefighter "boot camp" academy was graduated on May 24, 2002, Sycuan Indian Reservation. Graduates not pictured: Hocanson and Agundez were deployed to the Bullock Fire and missed graduation ceremonies.
