Chief Henry R. Murphy, Kumeyaay,
MEET THE CHIEF, founder of Sycuan Tribal Fire Department
Howka! (Kumeyaay language for hello!)
On behalf of the firefighters and staff of the Sycuan Fire Department of the Kumeyaay-Diegueño Native American Indians, I would like to formally welcome you to Sycuan's official fire department web site.
The Sycuan Tribal Fire Department has a proud tradition of loyal service to the Sycuan Indian Reservation and surrounding communities that comprise a large portion of the eastern San Diego County region.
After touring our web sites you will no doubt see we are a full-service professional fire-fighting organization dedicated to protecting and serving the needs of our Southern California Native American Indian community, neighbors and reservation visitors.
The Sycuan band's state-of-the-art fire and medical departments offer a broad range of professional training and career opportunities, fire-fighting services, wellness and emergency medical services that improve the quality of life that the Sycuan Reservation, Dehesa Valley, Alpine, Harbison Canyon, and San Diego area rural communities have learned to recognize and rely on.
The SYCUAN BAND OF KUMEYAAY NATION is pleased to offer this web site to provide important on-line information for our valued tribal members, employees, casino and resort guests and neighbors.
After touring our tribal web sites, should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to CONTACT the Sycuan Fire Dept or Sycuan Casino and Resort for more information about Sycuan services, career training and employment opportunities.
Again, thank you for touring the Sycuan Fire Department web sites and we would greatly appreciate hearing from you and seeing you on our Indian reservation.
Very Respectfully,

BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS

The Sycuan Tribal Fire Dept entered into a Public Law 93-638 tribal compact with the Bureau of Indian Affairs BIA-NIFC. This negotiated contract provides Sycuan with logistical and monetary U.S. Government support through federally-funded programs for federally-recognized Indian tribes who meet the stringent qualifications.
Federal funding for Native American tribes provides Sycuan with additional fire resources for national and community fire services, including homeland security, disaster preparedness and response, wildland urban interface WUI, hazardous fuel reduction, fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency services EMS, training center, helicopters and flycrews, facilities, salaries, equipment and apparatus.
The elite Sycuan Air and Wildland Division firefighters -- the Golden Eagles Hotshots Interagency Hotshot Crew IHC -- is one of only nine Native American IHC crews in the United States. There are more than 90 of these special federal fire-fighter IHC crews nationwide.
Close teamwork between federal, state, city and tribal governments helps Sycuan provide the best 24/7 fire and medical services available anywhere, including a well-equipped Structural Division, Air & Wildland Division, Emergency Medical Services EMS Division, and a Safety-Training Division to keep the machinery, fire crews and support staff physically, mentally and academically prepared and in top operating condition as emergency first responders.
